Agrigento today is the heir to a powerful city of antiquity, the famous Akràgas, which in the fifth century BC became one of the most flourishing and important cities in the Mediterranean deserving the name of "the most beautiful city of the mortals" (Pindaro). Testify to the extraordinary finds kept in the Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento and the majestic Valley of the Temples, declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Valley of the Temples is the largest archaeological site in the world (over 1,300 hectares) and also the park that boasts an exceptional conservation status of the Doric temples and the Hellenic finds contained therein. Historically, the Valley is the old Akragas, a monumental nucleus of the city of Agrigento.

The Scala dei Turchi is a rocky white marble wall that rises to the sea along the coast of Realmonte, near Porto Empedocle. The name comes from the past incursions by the Saracen pirates, once called "Turks", who were sheltered because of less windswept winds.
